The
Factoryville Playground Task
Force Committee is organizing a “Day
of Play” at the Christy Mathewson Park
(behind the Elementary Center) on
June 8th from 10am to 2pm. This is a
beginning step in qualifying for grant money to improve
existing parks with playgrounds. At this time we are looking
for community organizations, businesses, and families who
will help make the day a success. We ask that groups take
an hour or so, set up a “booth/event” centered around
play/healthy living and run that “booth/event” with the
families who attend the Day of Play. (Example: a hula hoop
contest, basketball game, relay, or whatever you can think
up).

Keep those box tops coming.
CAMPBELL'S LABELS FOR EDUCATIONCampbell's
Labels for Education is doing a bonus program where
they send us free scholastic books based on the
amount of labels we send in through March 31st. We
have 767 so far. At 1,000 we get 5 books, 2,000 is
10 books, and 3,000 is 20. Only 233 more for 5

Hi All:
Tuesday night’s meeting was primarily a wrap up for the end of
the year. Following are a few of the highlights:
Dr. Stoker had written a grant request which the school was
awarded. It comes from Lowe’s – “Lowe’s Toolbox Grant”
and Trail will get $5,000.00 toward a new computer center
in the Elementary Center. The PTO will match the grant and will
continue to look for additional funding to add to the computer
center. Over the summer we may ask for volunteers to help paint
the room and/or set up items as they are purchased.
Thank you Dr. Stoker and Lowes!
Tonight
(Thursday, May 17th) the Scholastic Book Fair
will have evening hours 6-8pm
May
22nd is Ice Cream Recess Day
– anyone able to help should arrive by 11:15am and bring an ice
cream scooper.
Volunteers Needed
Tuesday night
May
22nd
is
Kindergarten Family Fun Night at the Elementary Center. It
is a fun event where parents and children entering Kindergarten
come to the school, meet their new teacher, ride on a school bus
(around the parking lot), eat in the cafeteria, become familiar
with the layout of the building (scavenger hunt), and more.
The PTO helps with the scheduled activities and sets up a booth
of our own to introduce our group and collect parent info –
e-mail addresses etc. Anyone able to help – please contact
an officer.
Thank you!!
June
1st at 9:45am will be 6th Grade
Recognition
Last day of school is June 1st
– there will be an early dismissal
Please send in any Big G Box tops you have collected.
They have expiration dates printed on them so we’ll get in as
many as possible this month before any expire. Thank you!!
Thank you to all who were able to participate in Moe’s Trail
Night. We do not yet have any figures but we were happy to
see all the people supporting the PTO. Thank you!!
Fall Fundraiser (2012-2013 Walk-a-thon) – everyone agreed
we need to make this a bigger event. We may have an evening with
food and games to kick it off. There should be more excitement
during the days when the kids are walking. There were enough
ideas that will most likely have another PTO Meeting in June to
plan. Tentatively we’d meet at the Blue Bird on June 5th.
We’ll confirm that at a later date.
The PTO is looking for someone to pick out items the Easter
Bunny can give to the younger grades. This person is not
normally the same person who wears the bunny costume (although
they certainly can) they usually help the bunny from class to
class that day since there are visibility issues when wearing
the costume.
Please let an
officer know if you are able to take on this position.
THANK YOU TO ALL FOR A GREAT YEAR! We
cannot do it without you! Tracy will soon have a
list of all that was accomplished this school year. When it is
available we’ll happily share it with you. Have a
great summer!

I think someone counted 49 parents at the meeting last night
--- Normally there might be 4
Most, if not all, stayed to the end – around 11:30pm
I understand parents who were unable to attend have been calling
and e-mailing their concerns to Dr. Stoker and Mr. Rakauskas.
Those comments were appreciated by the Board and
community members.
A good part of the evening was spent discussing alternative
ways the school can get needed training and evaluation time
without disrupting children’s education or parent’s work
schedules. After much discussion, the vote on the Act 80
days was tabled in order to allow the Administration to prepare
a plan that balances student, parent, and staff needs in order
to satisfy educational goals. The discussion will continue
in the next “working meeting” to be held in the same place
on June 4th . This will be the time and
place to share your thoughts and concerns in person.
Comments and questions can be addressed to the Administration
and Board through email prior to the next meeting. Because the
Administration plans to explore alternative proposals, it will
be very important to follow this issue through to the vote.
The dress code and consequences of not adhering to
the dress code were briefly discussed. Input will be accepted
during the next working meeting on June 4th.
See attached proposed dress code
and disciplinary actions associated with the policy.
Mrs. Joyce, Trail’s
Curriculum Director, presented information on the
performance of Lackawanna Trail as seen on the PA state
website.
www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/pennsylvania...
She showed parents to how to use the information compiled by the
state to compare our District with other Districts across PA.
The information is based on compliance with No Child Left
Behind, PSSA scores, etc. The state sets a goal line and schools
are measured against that mark. You can see our standing at the
link above.
Earlier in the evening parents spoke about the need for students
to have quality time with teachers to improve our school’s
scores. Some parents brought up their thoughts on there being
too much down time during the day. At the last meeting a parent
expressed concerns about Trail’s student PSSA scores. Mrs.
Joyce asked that parents contact her with questions regarding
interpretation of student test scores, the current curriculum or
the changes that are required
as the District transitions to the State mandated Common Core
Curriculum.
Attached is a copy of the agenda
we followed last night. If you have any questions – please
contact Tracy
twescott@ha-pa.com or me at
j.wohlgemuth@pennsecurity.com
.
We hope to see you at the working meeting June 4th –
7:30pm in the elementary center.
Because the Administration plans to explore and present
alternative proposals, it will be very important to follow
through to the vote.
Your voice is still needed.

HELP NEEDED!!!
The PTO needs at least 5 helpers to pull off buying about 1,000 books
for our students,
Saturday, November
12th
at the
Putnam Penguin
Warehouse Sale. After hearing from several people I need to clarify – The PTO has the money to purchase the books. It is part of our budget that you generously contribute to through fundraisers and events.
We are looking for help picking out and loading up the books we purchase at the sale..
Twice a year, the PTO gives every student in our school a book through a
program that we call
Pick
A
Wonderful
Story
(aka
PAWS.).
To keep our costs low, the majority of the books that we purchase for
the students are from the Putnam Penguin Warehouse Sale. The next sale
will be held Saturday, November 12th in Conklin, NY. The plan is to
meet up at
9:30am
to carpool to the sale (location TBD based on who is coming.)
It takes about 45 minutes to get to
Conklin. That gets us to the sale at about 10:30 which is about 2
hours before the doors actually open between 12:30 and 1pm. From
experience, we have found that it is MUCH better to get there
early. By the time the sale starts, the line is wrapped around the
building and all down the road and those people that get there right
when the sale starts will wait hours just to get into the sale. We
will walk right in when the sale starts, the shelves will be fully
stocked and be at least somewhat organized and we can get all of our
shopping done within a couple of hours. We usually stop for pizza
after we're done and get home around
5pm.
The warehouse sale is phenomenal for the PTO because
every book that has a list price of $9.99 or less are priced at only
$1. We can get some amazing titles for the kids at a great price.
If you or your family are big readers or you have
someone on your Christmas list that is, you might want to consider
joining us at the warehouse sale. We always take time to shop for
ourselves too! Although half of the warehouse sale is kids books,
they also have tons of other kinds of books...adult hard cover best
sellers (I bought The Help last year,) Christmas books, audio books,
cookbooks, sewing books, home improvement books, jumbo-sized kids
books, sticker books, etc. Last year I bought all of my children's
teachers big piles of books for their classroom libraries. Another
mom has a preschooler and bought the whole class Xmas books and gave
the teacher giant copies of the Velveteen Rabbit and the Little
Engine that Could.
If you are interested, please contact

Thank you!!!

September 22, Hello All: Trish Brosious, from Foundations Dressage,
(she was at one of our Meet The Community Nights – 2 years ago maybe) is
going to set up an on-line auction to support the Falls Fire Company’s
efforts to help flood victims. Below is her message. If you are able to
contribute something to the auction, please contact her directly by
Wednesday, Sept. 28th at
foundationsdressage@hotmail.com
.
Hello all,
I'm sure by now everyone has seen pictures of the destruction from the
flooding along the Susquehanna River. If you are at all like me, with
minimal damage, you are wishing you could do more to help those affected.
So, I am organizing a small silent auction to benefit the Lake Winola/ Falls
Fire Company. The members of that company continued to work to help their
neighbors even as the 2 buildings on the Falls side of the river were
flooded out. I want to help them as they recover from this loss and I want
to show my thanks and support for everything that they do for this
community.
So I am currently collecting items for the auction. I am donating gift
certificates for lessons. Keith has promised one of his truly fantastic
desserts. Any item that you think clients and friends of FDC may be
interested in: gift certificates to tack shops/ restaurants, horse
equipment/ supplies, books, would be appreciated. Please be creative and
let me know what you would like to donate by the 28th. I'll send out
another e-mail shortly after the 28th describing everything that's available
and what the bidding procedure will be.
Any questions? just reply to this e-mail, call 378-2016, or message me on
Facebook.
Trish

money will each win an ice cream party!

September 15, Hello All:
Lauren Keyes, through DGK Insurance and Factoryville Women’s Group, is
working with the United Way to help Wyoming County residents who need
help after the flood.
Specifically there is a day care center called Hickory Dickory Doc in
Tunkhannock that needs toys and books and the
shelters need toiletry supplies. Any items too big for
students to bring in (car seats, other baby stuff, etc.) will be picked up.
Call Lauren at work = 945-3031 ext. 254 to arrange for pick up.
The
Elementary Center has offered to be a drop off site for items
people would like to donate. A bin will be put out for collection near the
main doors. People from DGK will collect the items dropped and get them to
the appropriate places.
Wednesday the 21st is the last day to make donations for this
drop off location.
If you
are a victim of the flood, see below info from Sandra Major regarding
getting additional help.

Hello All:
As you may know we are replacing the annual catalog fundraiser with a
walk-a-thon this year. This is the main source of funding we have and the
PTO officers have been working hard this summer to get business sponsors for
the walk. Businesses receive advertising benefits for their support (see
attached).
What does this mean to you?
During the first week of school, student pledge packets will be sent to you
through the school asking students to raise money for walking. Students
can earn GREAT PRIZES for different levels of support.
If you sign up a business
(click for form)
– your student can apply this sponsorship to their individual tally of money
and earn prize winning credits this way too.
One catch
– we need the business support by the beginning of September in order to
offer the full benefits to them.
As PTO Members you are being offered this additional advantage to
help your student earn prizes!
As always – Thank you for your support!!!

Welcome Back for the 2011-2012 School Year!
We would like to welcome everyone back to school. Your PTO (Parent Teacher
Organization) is a group that cares about what happens at Lackawanna Trail Elementary Center and tries to

and the administration.
This year we are excited to replace the annual catalog fundraiser with our 1st
ever “Taking a Step for Trail” Walk-a-thon!
PTO meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month and everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. Typical meetings last about 1 hour and include information about what is
happening at LTEC, Teacher representatives often provides insight into the needs and wants of teachers, and there is also plenty of time to share your
thoughts. Just show up and you will be heard. We are always looking for new ideas!
Our first meeting is Tuesday, September 20th
at 7:30 PM and we hope to see you there!
Mission
To strengthen our children’s education and development through the collaborative effort of parents, teachers, and administrators.

August 11,
School is almost here!
The PTO has been busy mulling over ideas throughout the summer. The
biggest change is the replacement of our catalog fundraiser with a
Walk-A-Thon. This
year we are going out on a limb and skipping the catalog fundraiser in favor of a walk-a-thon. Students will walk during gym and we may have
an evening event for the whole family at the end. The kids will be asked to collect pledges for their walk. Those
forms and more information will be sent home the first week of school. Please contact
us if you have any questions. We are also looking for
Business Sponsors. Each sponsor will be recognized for their support by their name being printed
on commemorative t-shirts, acknowledgment on our sight and/or listed on an event banner.

See ... info on local concert August 7th at Seamans Airport. You may contact Billy Dobitch at

Hello All:
We have reached the end of the school year and Tracy, Leslie, Charlene and I
(Jennifer) all feel really good about the way this year went. We want to
thank ALL of you for your support and enthusiasm.
Without you we’d be nowhere.
Warning:
This is a LONG e-mail full of many important things to think
about over the summer so if you do not have time now – you may want to save
this e-mail for another time.
Big G Box Tops:
As always, please keep cutting out those box tops and sending them in. In
the fall there will be a completion among the classes as to what classroom
brings in the most so keep cutting them out through the summer. We usually
get between two and three thousand dollars a year through that program to
fund classroom supplies and equipment. They are very important.
Fall Fundraiser:
Over the last few years we have gotten some unfavorable comments about the
fall catalog fundraiser. We understand… the problem has always been – how
else can we raise the bulk of the PTO budget if we do not have a catalog
fundraiser? This year we are going out on a limb and skipping the catalog
fundraiser in favor of a walk-a-thon. We are looking for business sponsors
and the kids to collect donations/pledges for their walk. Students will
walk during gym and we may have a dance-a-thon in the evening with a DJ for
the whole family. = The event is still in the idea stage BUT… we will be
working hard on it all summer. We need to have all our business sponsors
booked before fall SO…. If you would help by giving names, addresses, phone
numbers and contact of business we can speak with about the event Now and
Through the Summer – WE WILL BE SO HAPPY!!!
eScrips
(new program): eScrips links your SureSave grocery card to the
Lackawanna Trail PTO. SureSave will donate a percent based on your
purchases to the PTO. It's easy to register for eScrips. The link
is
http://www.escrip.com/.
Once there, you register for the Lackawanna Trail PTO (look under group
names). Then we get deposits. This may be the easiest fundraiser we have.
Positions Available:
For this coming fall 2011 – 2012 we are looking to fill:
Trail Gear Representative:
The person who takes this position will maintain the items we are selling on
the web-site, inventory in the PTO closet, order with local supplier and

Hi All: This
Wednesday the 25th,
John Rushefski, the High School Principal
will attend a PTO meeting to discuss the transition
from the Elementary Center to the High School and answer any questions.
We will meet in the library from 6pm to 7pm.
It was very informative last year and I highly recommend attending.
Afterward we will hold the regular monthly PTO meeting for those who can
stay.
Talk with an officer if you have any questions.

At long last the
Elementary Center Yard Sale
will be held this Saturday from 9am to 2:30pm. There are 20
individuals/families setting up tables as well as the PTO tables. Rain or
shine we’ll be there – inside the gym. Warm and dry. Please
stop in to check out all the great finds.
Anyone in interested in donating items to the PTO for sale may drop them off
Friday night between 7 and 8 pm or Saturday morning between 7:30 – 9am.
All proceeds from the PTO sale table, food sales and Trail Gear will benefit
the school by way of the PTO.
Hope to see you there.

Hi All: A PTO Member just sent me this flyer for a free event June 11th in the Abington Community Park.
Check it out - Looks like fun!
In case you are confused (like I was) the Abington Area Community Park is the one with the soccer fields near the State Hospital.

Hi All: Our regularly scheduled PTO meeting (Tuesday May 17th) will be postponed. Instead we will be at the
Scholastic Book Sale at the Elementary Center until 8pm. The spring book sale offers buy one scholastic book and get one free.
The High school principal will attend our May meeting (date to be announced) to discuss transitioning students and answer any questions. We'll keep you posted. The discussion last year was very informative -
I highly recommend parents of 6th grade students attend. There is quite a difference in expectations between the schools.
Hope to see you at the Book Fair!

HI All: It this time I believe we have 19 people setting up stands at the Yard Sale this Saturday. Plus the PTO will have 2 = food and Trail Gear.
I checked with the school - they do not have enough tables to cover all of us so plan to bring your own table. If after you set up you really need more table space - we MAY be able to give you one of the school tables - cannot promise that.
If there is NO WAY you can get a table to the school - let me know and I'll see what I can do.
I'll see you Friday night AFTER 7PM to set up.
The gym will be open Saturday morning at 7:30am to set up more. Our advertisements say we open at 9am but I think people like to come out early so we may have people before 9am.
Remember - the PTO and/or the school cannot be responsible for items left overnight.
There should be advertisements in the Scranton Paper, Abington Journal and Penny Saver. I started putting signs on the street poles. Yard signs turned out to be too expensive. I'll work on making signs from Rt 6&11 down through town to the school.
If you have any questions - please let me know.

Hi
All:
It is a cozy spring morning (glad not snow) and we hope you had
wonderful Easter celebrations.
However we now are hoping to get some help for a couple events – Kindergarten
Registration and HANDS Fun Night.
Kindergarten Registration:
This week
– Wednesday 27th through Friday 29th
Morning shift 9am –11:30am
Afternoon shift 1pm – 3pm
The school would like 3 volunteers per shift each day. This year there will not be
tours. Volunteers will help move children between testing stations at the nurse’s office.
HANDS Family Fun Night:
(for incoming
kindergarteners)
May
12th 5:30pm – 8:00pm
Volunteers will help children and families in the cafeteria lines,
assist at the PTO tables,
and what ever else we are requested to do –
this night is organized by HANDS.
By the way
– Leslie will be placing one more
Scrip
Order (gift certificates)
this school year for anyone who may need gift cards on hand for a summer
birthday, grocery shopping, etc. Please have orders in by May 16 so you
will have the cards before the end of school. Order forms are on the
PTO section of the school web site or call Leslie at 945-7729.
Please respond to this e-mail, contact any PTO officer
or call Leslie at 945 - 7729 with any questions or to sign up to help!

Hi All: Another great upcoming event – this one at the
Everhart Museum
April 30th starting at 1pm. Jeff, who
came to our April event, was telling us about the next Community Day at the
Everhart and it also sounded great. I’ve been to many of the museum’s
community day events and they are definitely worth attending if you have the
time.

Hi All:
We have a nice group of families and businesses signed up to sell at the
yard sale May 21st at
the Elementary Center
BUT…..
we still have room
for YOU.
Things to know:
You may set up Friday night (20th) if you want but we cannot
be responsible for anything left overnight. The school will be open
Saturday by 8am for set up then too. Our ads in the paper say the sale
is from 9am to 2:30pm. We have an ad that will run in the Scranton
Times/Tribune on the 19th, 20th and 21st.
We are looking into putting an ad in the Penny Saver. We will get the
firehouse sign to put on 6 & 11 and we will have yard signs made to
place around as well.
Also, we will have
raffles – American Girl Doll, Keurig Coffee Maker,
Disney Hopper
Passes
and more – the winners will be picked at the end of the day
– you do not need to be present to win.
We are open to
families/individuals who are selling traditional yard sale items,
crafters who need a place to sell, businesses, organizations looking to
fundraise, etc. Whoever you are
…..We are happy to have you join us!
If you are
interested – contact a PTO Officer below.

Hi
All: Show your school spirit on St Patrick's Day by wearing an Irish
Lions t-shirt. The shirt has been approved
by Mr. Gregory to be worn at school that day.
In
order to get them printed and distributed before the parade in Scranton
we need all orders by this Monday the 28th. All orders should be sent
to Leslie Grega either by sending the form into the school attn: Leslie
Grega or by e-mail to
lesliegrega @
yahoo.com.

Hello All: We've
been asked often lately to carry shirts that can be worn to school.
Attached is a short sleeved, collared shirt that the PTO is
offering.
The picture shows
LT on the shirt but the man who prints them has said he can put a
paw or a small lion on the shirt if requested.
Thank you! Keep
the requests coming. :)

Hi
All: We are tentatively signed up for the
Lackawanna Trail Yard Sale
on Saturday, May 21st.
The
PTO will take care of advertizing and general organization.
Anyone interested in signing up for a spot in the gym to sell their items –
please contact one of us. We are still working out the time – possibly 7:30
am to 3:30 pm? We are thinking of charging $20.00 for a spot (for the day)
which will go into the PTO budget. Any thoughts on the times or the price?
The
PTO will have a table for those of you who do not want to have your own
booth. You may drop off items for the PTO to sell – proceeds will be
donated to the PTO benefitting the school.
Anyone interested in helping organize or contribute ideas to make the event
a success – please contact us.
FYI:
The gym is not available May 5th so we will not be having the May
Family Fun Night – instead please join us that night at the Spring
Concert.
Also:
We are still looking for a date to meet at Gin’s for a Family Night Out.
We’ll get back with you regarding that date.
Keep in mind:
We are collecting photos for the year book – please send any you have
available in for that purpose. We take printed OR e-mailed pictures.
Please include info regarding the photo(s) – names, event, etc.
We
will be sending home a questionnaire regarding a “No
Fundraiser Fundraiser” soon. We do not need your names on the
form just your honest answers.
J
Thank you.

In
February or March we will have a
Family
Night out at Gins Restaurant.
They have offered to donate a portion of sales that night to the PTO
just like Friendly's did. Thank you to Gins. :)
Quarter Paddle Auction
rescheduled to March 9th from 6 to 8pm. Now that we know what this event is about we're excited
to give it another go. We have heard so much positive feed back from people who attended the first one- I know we'll have an extra great time
now that we know what we are doing. (Click for info)
Also,
in March we will be signing up for another group
Penguin's
Night.
We had a great time despite the weather - March will be much better.
More to follow.
2nd
Annual
Turn Off
The TV/ Meet The Community Night
will be on April 14th from 6-8pm. We have 13 organization already
signed up to come in and either play a game or do a project with the
kids.
We
have two possible dates for the
yard sale
- end of April or middle of May - as soon as that is finalized we'll let
you know. So hold on to all that good stuff and bring it to the group
yard sale at the school. We'll advertize in the local and Scranton
papers so we'll want all those bargain hunters to find plenty to see
when they arrive.
Our
next meeting
is scheduled for
February 16th
at 7:30pm. Anyone who has questions or comments are welcome to attend or
e-mail in to our group.
